food allergy testingIf you are a keen follower of the news then you will know that allergy testing has never been more important. Due to mislabelling and incorrect information, there have been a number of high-profile deaths. Is it that people are not taking it too seriously, or is it simply case that Britain as a whole does not know enough about allergy testing. These tragedies have led to a lot of questions about allergies, food intolerances and what to do in the case of an allergic reaction. Allergic reactions are a danger to many people’s health and to life itself, so we must take it more seriously. Have you ever been tested for allergies or intolerances? If not, make sure you take a test to identify your intolerances today! If you are seen to have an allergic reaction, then please do consult your GP immediately.

People should not live in fear of consuming certain foods, especially at well-respected food chains. None of us really know if we are at risk at the moment as we should trust the packaging. But, more importantly, would you know what to do if you are having an allergic reaction?

What is an allergic reaction?

People can develop an allergic reaction to any food item at any time, but it is more common that it is hereditary. Intolerance and allergy testing are important as you can learn what foods you need to avoid. However, an intolerance test does not always tell you how to cope with your sensitivities. At TMI Testing, our report includes a full in-depth list of the foods that you are intolerant to, as well as explaining what you can do to avoid these items. Reports do not usually give you advice on what to do if you have an allergic reaction.

If a person has an allergic reaction then it could be life-threatening. In this case, IgE is produced to fight off the specific allergen that you have come into contact with. If you are identified as being allergic to something like shellfish, and you are exposed to it, then an IgE antibody specific to shellfish is produced. You will then present many symptoms, with the worst case scenario being an anaphylactic shock. It is vital that someone close to you knows what to do if you have an allergic reaction.

What are the symptoms of an allergy?

Here are ten symptoms that might explain whether or not you have an allergy:

  1. Itchiness in the mouth or throat.
  2. Any type of difficulty in breathing, such as wheezing or coughing.
  3. Difficulty swallowing.
  4. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or stomach pain.
  5. An itchy redness to the skin, including raised red bumps, hives or welts.
  6. Mental confusion.
  7. Tightness or discomfort in the chest.
  8. Lightheadedness or dizziness.
  9. Low blood pressure, rapid pulse or heart palpitations.
  10. Fainting or loss of consciousness.

At TMI Testing, we do think that if you suspect you have an allergy then you should consult your GP immediately. Do not assume that you will be fine because you may not be. So, if you do recognise any of the above symptoms, please don’t leave anything to chance.
